How many times do we as educators hear "I have not learned that." or "I was not taught that way" ? It seems as though we reteach certain concepts every year and sometimes it seems as though we have such a hard time going forward. I am interested to see how affective the concept of vertically aligning our curriculum is. Is there a definite improvement and is it effective if not used at every grade level?
Very good plan. This plan seems to be how you will start your research by gathering the data and having the teachers look at the data and TEKS. As the teachers determine what is needs to be repeated, what doesn't, and what concepts need to be mastered vertically and all come to a consensus... I am then wondering.
ReplyDeleteHow often do you plan on evaluating the effectiveness of the vertical teaming, how often will you do vertical teaming, what grade or grade levels are involved, how will you provide quantitative feedback to the teachers about the progress, how will you determine your plan is working? Also are you focusing on one subject area or all? Are you involving the students in their own evaluation of their learnings? Why would teachers feel the need to repeat the same concepts?
Hope this helps with ideas for week 4 assignment! :)
I see where you are going with this action research plan, Rita. I suggest narrowing your focus on the TEKS that are TAKS tested objectives in most need of improvement for each grade level. Are they the same foundational concepts? The journal document is a fantastic idea. So many times, we as teachers don't look at the total picture affecting our instruction. We just look at what we've done in our classrooms. Your study will broaden that view. Also, you might consider inviting the SE and ESL teachers to your team for Step #4 to provide input on strategies to modify and accelerate learning for those special populations.
